Effects of exercise on cardiovascular systems (CVS):
Since we know that exercising can cause an increase in the energy demands and the cardiovascular system works to ensure the perfusions. Therefore, minimum or vigorous both kind of exercises affects the cardiovascular system. There can be short and long term effects of exercise on the CVS system.
Firstly, there are drastic changes taking place during and after exercise. These effects tend to make a therapeutic healthy adaptation that helps in growth of cardiac muscles due to increased workload. Exercising can directly cause an increase in oxygen requirement to muscle, increased need to pump blood to lungs for re-oxygenation.
Short term effects on CVS include:
- Increased in heart rate due to the increased requirement to pump the blood. This can be attained when the heart works faster so as to pump more blood to the muscles.
- The brain can stimulate the release of adrenaline so stimulate heart so that it can beat faster. This is known as “anticipatory response”.
- Exercising can cause an increase in stroke volume. Stroke volume is defined as the blood pump by left ventricle per beat. since there is more demand for oxygen, therefore, the volume of blood pump from left ventricle tends to increase to meet the required demand.
- There is increased blood flow to hard-working Exercising can put the respective muscles under stress and it needs a lot of perfusions to work. Therefore, the energy supply to those muscles is increased and the blood supply to other systems which don’t have to work more during exercising is shunted. These systems include the digestive system, urinary system.
- Blood supply to the skin is also increased as increased supply helps in vasodilation which works to cool down the body.
Long term effects of exercising can cause CVS to:
- The heart becomes very efficient therefore resting heart rate is usually also increased.
- Since the heart is used to of working more during the sessions of exercise. Therefore, even at rest, the tidal volume is increased as a natural ability of the heart to pump more blood.
- There is improved circulation of the overall body due to the increased ability of the heart to pump blood.
- Blood volume is also increased by increasing the number of Red blood cells in the blood to aid in the delivery of more oxygen.
Surprisingly, the effects of exercise are not limited to CVS only. Rather exercising effects skeletal system and respiratory system also.
Following are the effects of exercise on the skeletal system:
- Due to the increased need for oxygen during exercising the tissue perfusion to skeletal muscles is increased.
- There is frequent muscle contraction.
- Due to increased work, tissue metabolism tend to increase which cause an increase in muscle temperature
- Bone formation also takes place which makes bones strong. Therefore, there is an increase in the density and width of bones.
- The strength of muscles, tendons, and ligaments is also increased which can protect muscles and tendons against the wear and tear thereby increasing their endurance.
There are also the effects of exercise on the respiratory system as well it includes:
- Increase in respiratory rate due to an increase in oxygen demand plus an increase in tidal volume which is amount to air that a person inhales per breath.
- The efficiency of breathing is also increased which strengthen the diaphragm.
